My Night Time Routine For Less Stress and Better Sleep

A few weeks ago, I wrote about my new and improved morning routine. Changing my morning routine really changed up my whole day and made me feel more awake and productive throughout the day. Well, now that I have a solid morning routine figured out, it’s just as important to have a night time routine, too! These tips help me get a good nights sleep, feel less stressed and more prepared for the day to come.

Caffeine Intake

One big mistake I used to make was drinking caffeine too late in the day. I would have caffeinated coffee or tea in the evening, and it would keep me up at night. Some people aren’t bothered by caffeine. I used to think I wasn’t, but I realized I was really hyped up when I was trying to sleep. Now, I stop drinking caffeine after 4:00 pm. This has worked very well for me. However, sometimes, you NEED caffeine to stay up to do work. BUT, when you can stop earlier, try it and see what happens.

Clean Room

Having a clean room reduces my stress. Seriously. When it’s messy before I go to sleep, all I want to do it clean it. Then, when I wake up in the morning, I want to clean. So, I’ve started to clean before bed. It takes maybe 5 minutes, but it makes all the difference.

To Do List

I. Love. To. Do. Lists. They are the best. Make a to do list before bed so your mind won’t be racing when you’re trying to fall asleep. I make lists all the time, and it helps me not think so much when I’m trying to relax and sleep. I write down what I have to do and just overall things I want to get accomplished. It’s funny how a simple list can make you feel less stressed.


WATER! We all know how important it is to drink water. Staying hydrated is so important, and for me, I need to drink water before bed. If I wake up at night and forgot to put water out, I end up getting up to go to the kitchen to get water, which makes me wide awake. Avoid this by keeping water at your bedside. We started leaving a few bottles of water on our bed stands so if you forget, they’re still there.

Wash Up

I need to wash my face before bed, or I just won’t sleep well. Brush my teeth, wash my face, take off my make up, use a face mask… the whole shebang! I’ve noticed that when I fall asleep without washing up I don’t sleep as well and wake up in the middle of the night to wash up.

I’ve just started using Origins Out of Trouble face mask, and it is SO AMAZING. It has all natural products and was green before green was a big thing (according to the lovely lady at Ulta who was talking to me about it). If you aren’t in the habit already, make sure to set your alarm! I always do it right when I get into bed. Do what works best for you, but don’t forget! I’ve forgotten to set mine before, and I wake up and have to set it – making it harder to fall back asleep. Also, having the comfort of knowing your alarm is set is one less thing to stress about.

Essential Oils

You’ve heard me give my spiel on essential oils before, but that’s because they really do work. I am a huge fan of them because they help reduce stress and sleep better – so why wouldn’t I be a huge fan?! I highly recommend lavender oil or peppermint oil – both work great for me.


The right temperature is also something that has helped me get better sleep. If it’s too hot, there’s no way I can sleep. If it’s too cold, I need to make sure I have enough blankets. Whatever you prefer, set the temperature to your liking! It’s one less thing you will wake up to in the middle of the night.
